Brandon Varnell is the writer of the American Kitsune series. He has absolutely no skill at anything aside from writing and looking half-baked. He used to play guitar, but due to laziness, he never went anywhere with it. He also used to play a lot of video games, but after suffering this terrible affliction called book addiction, he only plays occasionally these days. Brandon lives mostly within his own imagination, but can occasionally be found in Phoenix, Arizona.

For several years now - at least three - Brandon has dreamed of becoming a full-time author. He would love it if the time came when he could wake up, write several thousand words, and then call it a day. To reach this goal, he tends to write. A lot. He writes fan fiction, he writes original fiction, he writes Erotic fiction... oh, wait. No, he doesn't. He just writes stories with a lot of fan service.

Aside from being an avid writer, Brandon also likes to cosplay. You can generally find him at the local Comicon dressed as various characters from movies, video games and anime. His current favorite people to cosplay are Han Solo (who doesn't want to be a roguish smuggler?), Cloud Strife (he likes the big ass sword), Dante, and Squall Leonhart. He has also thought of trying to cosplay as Darth Vader or Zero (Lelouch Lamperouge from Code Geass), but has decided to stay away from all black cosplay since he lives in Arizona - it's really hot in that state, you know.

He also loves anime, which makes a lot of sense, seeing how the entire American Kitsune series is basically just one big anime parody.

My Review

Spindle was an adorable fairy-tale retelling. If you loved the story of Sleeping Beauty, you will definitely love Spindle.

All Briar Rose wants in life, is to marry her ex and be able to keep her siblings together on her very low salary. Working at the spinning mill isn't all fun and games, Briar has a busted frame and has to work extra hard to make any money to keep her boarding and keep the children fed. When a mysterious peddle offers her a spindle that will help her production, Briar is hesitant at first, but with all the bad in her life she decides to give it a try. All the girls who have touched the spindle are ending up sick, could the fair-tale of Sleeping Beauty and the evil spindle bewitched by Isadora be real?

I loved the characters in this book. Briar Rose, the children, Henry, the Boarding girls and the fairies were all so wonderful! Every character had something about them that made you really care for them. The only character I didn't like was Wheeler, Briar's ex, and thats for obvious reasons.

The storyline of this novel was fairly good. I found it to be quite boring in the beginning, it didn't really pick up till about halfway though the book. Once the action started happening the book was a lot better to read.

While I thought the romance in this book was very cute, it wasn't the type of romance where you're like "OMG I NEED THEM TO END UP TOGETHER." You know? It was cute and all, but not amazing.

An aspect of this book I really liked was the part of the women trying to rally together to get the right to vote. I thought it was very inspirational, and I absolutely loved the quote about Susan B. Anthony (I did a project on her in grade 11).

This book was very well written, and if it wasn't for some small aspects I would have considered giving this book 5 stars. I still highly recommend it to every who enjoys fairy-tale retellings.

I trudged up the stairs to my apartment and wiped wet tendrils from my face. Water sloshed in my boots, a reminder of today’s most recent adventure. I’d had the pleasure of bodyguard duty for a water nymph, which was no easy task given that, in her eyes, I was a glorified babysitter, and we happened to be staying in a cabin that was mere feet from the Spokane River. It was the middle of January, and I’d taken the polar bear plunge more than once today. I was chilled to the bone, wet, hungry, and I sorely needed a good cup of coffee, or three.

Only one more flight of stairs to go. I could already taste the coffee on my tongue and feel the hot spray of a warm shower against my skin.
As my apartment door came into view, the hairs on the back of my neck rose and my body went on high alert. Something was off, and dammit, wasn’t that just my luck. I stood in the hall, a chilling breeze whipping my wet hair around my face from the open balcony doors and stinging my cheeks. Shit, it was cold.
I narrowed my gaze. Why were the balcony doors open in the middle of winter? It was like a blizzard out there. I stepped closer toward the balcony, intending to shut the doors, when a splash of red to my left caught my attention instead. There was blood on the doorknob leading into my apartment. This couldn’t be good.
I took a deep breath and debated just turning around. I was too tired to deal with anything else today. Was it too much to ask for some dry clothes and a hot cup of coffee? For chrissakes, I’d take a cold cup of coffee at this point. Then again, it was my apartment, and with my luck, there would be a dead body inside and I’d be framed for the murder. Why couldn’t stuff like this happen at a decent time of day when I was fully rested?
I pressed my ear against the door. Well, really it was more like I slumped against the door, but the result was the same. I listened for any signs of movement. The wooden door was cool against my cheek. Silence greeted me. Hmm, maybe there really is a dead body, I mused with a sick sense of morbid curiosity.
