My Review

“It is the ugliest aspect of human nature that we fear what is most different from ourselves with such violent contempt.” 

This series just keeps getting better and better. Ghostly Echoes has been my favourite book in this series so far.

Ten years ago, Abigail was murdered. Now there are similar murders occurring, and Jackaby and Abigail might finally have a shot at figuring out who truly murdered Jenny and what happened to her fiancé. 

I really liked Abigail in the first book, she really grew on me in the second book and now she has become one of my favourite characters. Her character development has been absolutely fantastic. She has gone from a scared girl who stays back, to a strong woman that dives right into the action. The part in the book where Abigail volunteers to do something very dangerous, I had to put the book down for a second because I was so proud of this girl. She's not afraid to do what has to be done, she's comfortable with who she is and she's so outgoing. I honestly love her. 

Jackaby is still the crazy goofball that surprises you one minute, and makes you laugh the next. His character doesn't go through much character development, but that is perfectly fine because he doesn't need to change. He's the character that makes you laugh during a serious moment and confuses you at one point but shows you the light the next scene. He is absolutely fantastic.

The plot-line of this story is so much more interesting than the other two books. I think it might be because its not as out there as the first two books were, and its much closer to the characters we've gotten to know. This book felt a little more serious compared to the silliness in the first two books, but it was so very well written that I absolutely loved the change.

I can't wait to read the next book. We get a little hint about it at the end of this book and I'm dying to read it already. 

Overall, I highly recommend this series to all fantasy and YA lovers. I guarantee you will fall in love with at least one of the characters in this book.

My Review

The Wood is a very creative story about woods that contain time travelling portals and the guardians that guard the wood and the travellers that enter it.

After Winter's Dad suddenly disappears and the council blames it on him losing his mind in the Wood, Winter takes it upon herself to solve the mystery of her father's disappearance. When a mysterious traveller keeps appearing in Winter's part of the Wood, Winter knows that something is wrong, no one should be able to access the Wood so easily. When Henry reveals the reason why he's seeking passage through the Wood, he and Winter decide to work together to solve the mystery of the Wood and the occurring disappearances. 

Honestly, I've never been a fan of time travelling stories. Like never. I don't know what it is about them, but I just don't enjoy them as much as other fantasies. You'd think I would stop reading them, but for some reason I keep trying to find a time travelling book I like.

Although this book contained very minimal time travelling, as in only one character time travelled and we didn't change settings... I still found myself not liking this book very much.

Winter was a good main character. She wasn't great, but she also didn't make me mad, she was just average. Winter's main problem in the story was trying to balance school and work at the same time as dealing with the death of her father. She's skipping classes, ignoring her best friend and intentionally not looking for a romance because her job in the wood comes first, and with that comes the thoughts of her father and her believing that he might not be dead. I really connected with Winter in this part of the story, and I really liked her up to this point. Once Winter meets Henry things start to change a little.

I like Winter, and I like Henry. They're both good characters, but I don't see them being more than friends. The whole romance between them that was added seemed really forced, and I didn't not enjoy it at all. I feel like the story would have been so much better if the two had remained friends. 

The world building in this story was truly fantastic. I loved the idea of the Wood, the history of the guardians and how they protect it and all the creatures in the Wood. It was all so creative. This was one of the most important aspects of why I liked this book. The other would have to be the family element. This book was very family related, with Winter dealing with her father's death and trying to stay close to her mother. I absolutely loved every scene with Winter and either/both of her parents.

The ending of this book was really intriguing. While there was no plot twists (maybe there was one, but I was expecting it from the beginning) the ending was still fairly emotional and very engaging, I definitely couldn't put the book down around the last third of the book. But while the ending was good, I was left with a lot of questions that were never answered, which kind of left me in the "Wait that's it?" state of mind, where I'm constantly questioning things.

Overall, this wasn't my favourite book, but I still enjoyed it. If you like time travelling stories then check this one out for sure.

My Review

Such a beautiful story with a really great meaning. 

After finding her current boyfriend cheating, Jessa decides to drive herself home. When a driver hits Jessica and sends her to the hospital, the last thing that Jessa has is gone. With new scars on her face, Jessa has lost the one thing she's been able to hold on to, her beauty. Now ugly and broken on the inside after her parents divorce, Jessa moves away from LA to Colorado with her dad. Can she find a way to repair the damages that have been with her for such a long time.

I truly liked Jessa's character. While she is broken and sad, she doesn't necessarily shut everything down and is open to getting better and listening to other people and their opinion. While she may not see it, she is very smart and kind. I really loved her.

The side story to this book is about Hannah and Marshall, a set of twins both going through their own pain, which end up becoming best friends/boyfriend to Jessa. I honestly enjoyed Hannah's story the most and was constantly waiting to see what happens to her.

While I loved all the characters, and I was constantly excited to see what happens to them, there wasn't much action or intensity to this story. There wasn't any crazy plot twist or any intense action that kept the reader engaged. I feel like if you don't like the main characters from the beginning then you wont enjoy the story.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and the characters, but I would have liked it much more if the story wasn't so predictable. I would still highly recommend this book to anyone, especially if you love stories about mental illnesses and/or guardian angels.

June Wrap-Up

Hello everyone. This year I've decided to update you guys with a monthly wrap-up, where I let you know everything that has been happening on Angelic Book Reviews this past month.

What Happened This Month
June was crazy busy for me. I was taking a June class at university, and since its only a month long instead of four, it was crazy sped up where I basically has an exam once a week and lab reports due within 2 days. While it was crazy, I really learned a lot and I'm so glad I took the class. Not to mention I ended up getting an A :)

As soon as my class was over, I started my road trip to Ontario and Quebec. Currently I'm in Montreal and I absolutely love it here. For all my fellow Canadians, celebrating Canada Day at parliament hill in Ottawa is a good idea, unless you're claustrophobic or just hate people in general. My trip lasts for another week, and then I'll be able to head home.

I've just been accepted to two more part time jobs, which means that when I get back I will be working 3 part time jobs at once. This girl really needs some money for more travelling and to pay for school.

I hope you had a lovely June and the rest of your summer is as wonderful as mine.

My Review

I wanted to like this book so much, but I just couldn't get into it. It's very rare that I leave a book and DNF it, but I've been trying to start this one for a few months and every time I give up and pick up another book.

I was so excited by the blurb, it sounds action packed, with a hint of the Maze Runner. That sounds good right? Well maybe it got better in the end but I just couldn't get there.

Every year, kids between the ages of 10 to 16 are chosen to enter the labyrinth and become Icarii. If you manage to make it out of the labyrinth you get to become and Angel. 

The main character is chosen to go into the labyrinth, and thats when the story begins. But the reason why I couldn't get into the book, was basically because I hated the main character, and most of the other characters in the book. The main character has no spunk, no life, she's very dull. Kind of like Kristen Stewart (who I hate). I thought her actions were horrible, I didn't like being in her head and I thought she was very unintelligent. She was basically the opposite of what I look for in a main character.

I heard a few people talking about this book, saying that the ending was absolutely amazing, and it made the whole book for them. So if you think you can manage to read in the main character's point of view then I would say give it a try, but if you're like me, then don't bother.

I wish the book and the series luck, I really wish I could have enjoyed it.

Summer TBR Wipeout: Introduction

The wonderful Olivia at The Candid Cover is hosting the Second Annual Summer TBR Wipeout. The Challenge works to encourage you to try to work through that pesky TBR pile that seems to never end. Sign ups are open till July 7th and there is a wonderful giveaway if you join the challenge. I hope to see you there.

For the duration of the challenge I hope to read at least 20 books. My TBR pile has gotten massive over the last few months of school and the beginning months of summer, and I really need to get it down to a few books. Here is what I'm planning on reading for the rest of the summer.
