Yearly Wrap-Up 2016

The new year is upon us, and with that, we have to let go of the old.
2016 was an... interesting year. While it had lots of bad, lets take a moment to remember the good.
This year, my university life was absolutely hectic, I had a lot of hard classes and even harder exams, but what I am most proud of, is that I finally learned how to balance blogging/reading with school.
I set some blogging goals for myself last January, and they weren't the best. They were very vague and boring. So I decided to set some new goals for September, and I am very glad I did.

What Were My Goals?
1. Read on the bus
2. Listen to more Audiobooks
3. Schedule posts around exams
4. Be a part of more tours, blitz, and cover reveals

How did I do?
Surprisingly I did fairly well.
While reading on the bus was still challenging (mostly because my bus is super full), I did manage to listen to quite a few audiobooks on the bus, as well as walking my dog. I scheduled posts ahead of time around my midterms and finals so I could focus on my schooling, and I managed to be a part of a lot of more Tours, Blitz and Cover reveals. So I would say, this was a fairly successful year in blogging.

Reading Stats
This year I read 45 books, with a total of 15,635 pages.
I completed my Goodreads Reading Challenge, and beat it by 10 books.
I completed the Netgalley & Edelweiss Reading Challenge, and beat it by 9 books.

Favourite book read this year

Honorable Mentions

I'm wishing you guys a safe and happy new year. May 2017 be a lot better than 2016 was.
Thank you so much for visiting and being a part of my blog!

But Ruby's powers are unpredictable, and she's not sure she's willing to let the rebels and an infuriating (yet irresistible) young man called Arcus use her as their weapon. All she wants is revenge, but before they can take action, Ruby is captured and forced to take part in the king's tournaments that pit fireblood prisoners against frostblood champions. Now she has only one chance to destroy the maniacal ruler who has taken everything from her and from the icy young man she has come to love.

Mini Review: Oblivion by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Series: Lux #1.5
Publication Date: December 1st 2015
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Genre: YA, Fantasy
Amazon ~ Goodreads ~ B&N

Synopsis: Experience the epic love story of OBSIDIAN as told by its hero, Daemon Black…

I knew the moment Katy Swartz moved in next door, there was going to be trouble. Lots of it.

And trouble’s the last thing I need, since I’m not exactly from around here. My people arrived on Earth from Lux, a planet thirteen billion light years away. Plus, if there’s one thing I know, it’s that humans can’t be trusted. We scare them. We can do things they only dream about, and honestly, we make them look weak as hell. ‘Cuz they are.

But Kat is getting to me in ways no one else has, and I can't stop myself from wanting her—or wanting to use my powers to protect her. She makes me weak, and I’m the strongest of our kind, tasked with protecting us all. So this one simple girl…she can mean the end for us. Because the Luxen have an even bigger enemy—the Arum, and I need to stay on my game.

Falling for Katy—a human—won't just place her in danger. It could get us all killed, and that’s one thing I’ll never let happen...

My Rating
4/5 stars

My Review
“And I also know that although she wasn’t mine now, she would be one day.”

Oblivion is a must read to anyone who wants to re-read the Obsidian, or wants a step inside Daemons head.

Oblivion is essentially the first book in the Lux series, but told from Daemon's point of view rather than Kat's. You get to see what exactly Daemon was doing when Kat wasn't looking, and everything that was going through his mind.

I absolutely loved Obsidian and Daemon so my love for this book is evident. Even though you knew exactly what was going to happen (if you read the first book that is), it still felt like a brand new book where you have no clue what the main character has up their sleeves. Daemon never disappoints and always keeps you on your toes.

I gave Obsidian a 5/5 star rating, but I only gave this one a 4/5 because no matter how much I loved Daemon and his point of view, it just wasn't the same as seeing things from Kat's eyes.

If you love this series, definitely give this book a try. You will not regret it.

Happy Reading,
Aneta

Stacking the Shelves

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews. With this amazing meme, you can check out which books I've gotten this past week.

Sorry guys, I haven't had time to post a StS in a while, so this will consist of everything I've gotten in the past month.

Curse of Stars by Donna Compositor
Sabi Perez is the last Diamond Crier, only she doesn’t know it. Not until a crazed ruler from another world comes to collect her priceless tears and won’t take no for an answer.

Living in New York, Sabi’s seen some nasty things, but the lengths to which her captor will go to keep his crown are things found only in the darkest nightmares. Afraid and alone, Sabi finds solace in her cellmate, Anya, and Cabal, a fellow Crier who also has powers, a rare combination that buys his favor from the ruler. Only it’s a favor he doesn’t want.

In a fit of rage, power erupts out of Sabi, the same power Cabal has, and a spark of hope ignites. Together they may have a chance at escape, something no other Crier has done. Except a ruler hellbent on draining them of every last diamond tear isn’t their only hurdle. If they escape they’ll be hunted to the ends of the earth, if they survive the trek to safety. If they stay the ruler will leech them dry. Sabi would rather die trying than lie down and die, even if that means running away into even more danger.

Book Blitz & $50 Giveaway: The Battle for Christmas by Jeremy Hinshaw

The Battle for Christmas
by Jeremy Hinshaw
Publication Date: July 25th 2016
Publisher: Westbow Press
Genre: YA, Fantasy
Amazon ~ Goodreads

Synopsis: After training and practicing for the auditions, Andy’s friends excelled. Andy, however, failed miserably. When the positions were posted, his worst fears came true – he was the only angel not given a job for the birth of Lord Jesus.
Would Andy be the only angel not to have an assignment for this climactic event?
How did Heaven defend Bethlehem from the onslaught of Lucifer and his horde of demons?

Praise for the Book
This was a great book to bring alive the story of Jesus birth, especially for those who have heard it many times before. Although fiction, it challenges us to remember that we are not doing this on our own. There is a whole army of angels at our disposal. Thank you Jeremy for captivating my thoughts and painting such a glorious picture, not often considered when thinking of that blessed day. From the very beginning as you described the landscapes I was hooked. The details breaking out the characters and each one's place in the story are masterfully woven. The story is packed with enough intrigue, adventure, and truth to be enticing to readers of all ages, and especially the youth of today. Compared to other books I have read on the subject, this one takes the cake with its creative story-line that is jam packed with adventure, humor, and close-calls. I recommend this book to anyone that is a fan of adventure. A fresh take on the matter that is certain to wow its readers. Especially those interested in a view behind the veil that we all know exists! I loved The Battle for Christmas. Not only is it a book I’ll read again, but it’s also a book I can’t wait to share with my children and nieces and nephews. In The Battle for Christmas we get a great fantasy paired with reminders of our hope and our faith. Plus, what an adventure! I really liked Andy. He’s the type of character young readers will want to emulate, and one we’ll want our children to emulate. I think his gift is one we all struggle with and one of the most important.

 Excerpt
“We had to send angels to Earth to speak to people in dreams. Because of what was going to happen, some of the humans needed direct communication from Heaven to prepare for His Majesty’s birth. IDTs would be needed as guards for John the Baptist, Elisabeth, and Zechariah, not to mention Herod, the scribes, the wise men, the shepherds, and the …” “The shepherds needed guards?” “What about Mary and Joseph?” “Well, of course, the shepherds needed protection. What would happen if the Heavenly Host showed up to proclaim the Lord’s birth and no one was there? Everyone needed protection. The day Lucifer tricked Eve, the Lord Almighty cursed Lucifer. The Lord Almighty warned Lucifer that Lord Jesus was going to crush his head and Lucifer would be lucky to strike at Lord Jesus’s foot. Lucifer didn’t want this to happen. He knew if Lord Jesus was going to be born, it would be another step closer to his demise.

My Rating
2/5 stars

My Review
"I think evil isn't so cut and dry. Sometimes it wears the face of a friend or an average person. That's what makes it so insidious."

She was killed by a drunk driver. Sent to heaven, Grace has been given the chance to become an angel, but first she must save Camen's soul, the boy who just might be the antichrist.
Josh was the drunk driver that killed Grace, and ultimately killed himself in the process. Sent to hell, Lucifer gives him the choice of eternal torment, or helping him turn Camden to the dark side.
Angels aren't meant to fall in love with demons, especially ones who killed them in their previous life.

Soul Crossed is a very fast and easy read. While it doesn't take much to get into the book, the book itself is very predictable.

I really wish I could have liked this book more, it definitely had the potential because the storyline is very creative. Yet I didn't like any of the characters, and I predicted everything that happened in the book.

Grace is a very sweet and pretty girl. I loved how she was so nice and helpful, but she was also very naive, and an idiot at times. She just kept making mistakes after mistakes, its like she wasn't even focused on her mission half the time, which made me really mad.
I wasn't a fan of Josh as well, he was supposed to be this tough yet broken guy because of his father, but all we hear from him is "wow it sucks I'm a demon" and "Damn I wanna do that Grace girl." His part of the book was just boring.
And the only thing I have to say about Camden was that he is super creepy!

Of course the romance in this book was insta love. And it wasn't even the cute insta love where you're rooting for the couple to be together. No, this was the - I wanna barf - type of insta love. Of course they're attracted to each other right from the beginning, and then they think they're soul mates and care more about each other than the mission they were sent on. Seriously open your eyes people, you're already dead!

Overall, it had potential, but the crappy romance and characters ruined it. If you decide to give this book a try, I hope you like it more than I did.

Happy Reading,
- Aneta
