Publication Date: January 7th 2014
Genre: YA, Fantasy

Synopsis: A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and a thrilling love triangle.

Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she's sworn to protect?

My Rating: 5/5 stars

My Review: Defy is an amazing story about a beautiful and strong girl named Alexa, or Alex as she is known by her fellow members of the King's Army. When Alexa was young, she witnessed the death of both her parents by a Black Sorcerer, to escape becoming a prisoner she decided to pose as a boy with her twin brother Marcel in the King's Army. Now 17, Alexa is one of the most feared fighters in the castle, but when a sorcerer comes in the middle of the night, to abduct Prince Damian, Alexa finds herself captive in the enemy territory.

This book was fantastic from the start. I instantly fell in love with Alexa, if I was in her place I would have done the exact same thing. I felt like she was a real person, the amount of detail the author put into her emotions and skills was just amazing! You definitely get to see lots of character development which was perfect for me.

Every great book nowadays has a love triangle. And so did this book, and it was absolutely fantastic. Alexa is trapped between her feelings towards the prince, now that she has got to know him better, and her best friend Rylan. Rylan has been there for her ever since she joined the King's Army, but she's been recently assigned to watch over the prince, realizing that he's not as snobby as he pretends to be Alexa develops some feelings for him. The only problem is that she is supposed to be a boy.
I definitely liked this love triangle. This is one of those books where its really hard to pick which one you like better. I must say that I ended up having a favorite, but it was really hard for me to chose.

The only thing I was kind of disappointed with was the world-building. I feel like if you have an amazing story such as this one, you need a crazy detailed world filled with magic and different places with cool names. Sadly this story didn't have that. We pretty much only got to know of the town Alexa lived in before the attack, and the Castle they stayed at. The rest of the book was just focused on action and feeling, even when Alexa went into the jungle, or got abducted.

Even with the missing details in the world-building, the action and characters were so amazing int his book that I have to give it a 5/5. I would definitely recommend this book to all Young Adult readers who love some crazy action and a good love triangle. You won't be disappointed.

Happy Reading,

  1. I'm glad you enjoyed the book, and also wrote a great review! I've heard mixed reviews about Defy, but I think I'm going to pick it up when I'm at the library because I'm not too picky about romance. However, I don't know how I'm going to like the world-building, because I LOVE WORLDS and world-building is super important to me.

I guess I'm just going to have to find out myself. Anyways, I look forward to what you think of Of Triton! (because I stopped halfway and wondered if I should pick it up again)

    1. I know, I love my worlds too. And it definitely sucked that there wasn't much in this book. But hopefully you like the characters as much as I do.

And noo!! Now I'm kind of scared to read Of Triton, I hate when books get boring and I get discouraged. But I'm gonna give it a try anyways ;)
