Review: United by Melissa Landers

Series: Alienated #3
Publication Date: August 2nd, 2016
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
Genre:YA, Fantasy, Aliens
Amazon ~ Goodreads ~ B&N

Synopsis: After thwarting a deadly coup and saving the alliance between their worlds, Cara and Aelyx have finally earned a break. Their tiny island colony is everything they dreamed it would be―days spent gathering shells on the beach and nights in each other’s arms.

But the vacation is short-lived.

The treaty between Earth and L’eihr has awakened an ancient force that threatens to destroy them all. The Aribol, mysterious guardians charged with maintaining interstellar peace, deem the alliance a threat to the galaxy. They order a separation of the races, decreeing humans and L’eihrs must return to their own planets within the month or face extinction. In fact, they already have agents in place on Earth, ready to begin.

With the clock ticking, Aelyx and Cara assemble a team of colonists and race back to Earth, where they unite with old friends to solve the mystery of who the Aribol are, what they want, and the real reason the alliance has provoked them. As tensions build to a full-scale war, Aelyx and Cara must fight harder than ever―not just for their future, but for the survival of both their worlds.

My Review
I think this is the first time that the last book in a series has been my favourite. But it's true! I loved United way more than the first two books, don't get me wrong, they were great, but this one just tied everything together and had such a great storyline that I could not put the book down. It was all so amazing, I'm very sad that the series is over.

We pick up the story with Cara and Aelyx setting out to the colony. The place where they are supposed to get their happily ever after among their fellow humans and L'ehirs. But when the ancient race of Aribol reach out to them, giving them the option of severing the contact between the two planets or being destroyed, Cara and Aelyx must fight for their life together as well as the safety of both of their planets.

I am so happy with the way this book turned out. All the questions you've had in the previous books about Jackson and Aisley, Cara's brother, what happens to Serene now that David has passed away? All those question will be answered in this book, with some crazy action that will keep you on your toes.

The romance in this book does not disappoint. After having the distance between Cara and Aelyx in the last book, it was such a relief to see them together in this one, working side by side to create a future for themselves. While I loved reading about the two of them, because they just seem like a married couple already, what I really enjoyed reading about was how Serene was dealing with the passing of David, as well as the new budding romance between Aelyx and Cara's siblings. Wink wink.

The world-builidng was about the same level as the other books, this time we get to see lots from the colony and a few new places on earth as well as some space ships which was alright. It was very well written but definitely not the main focus of the book.

Overall, I loved the action, the storyline, the characters. Basically everything. I loved how the author decided to end the story and I will definitely be reading more from this author. I highly recommend this series to everyone who loves YA Fantasy books, you won't be disappointed.

Happy Reading,
Aneta

EXCERPT:
“If I could…” he whispered. “If I could, I’d hold him tight and never let him go.”
A moment passed between us. A reminder of what we couldn’t have.
“Callista,” he said gently. “Tell him I said hi. Please.”
I chewed the inside of my cheek, but I nodded.
“Callista,” he said, his voice low. “Callista, I’m so sorr—”
I awoke with a gasp on the cot. I grimaced, feeling sore in unfamiliar spots. Paul stirred on his bed, and I quietly laid my head on the thin mattress. I stroked a hand along his arm, watching every bit of him.
My son.
I leaned in to whisper into his ear. I might have been angry at Plutus for everything, but I did know that there were things beyond our control. I understood it, but I didn’t have to like it or accept it. I did decide to give Plutus this peace offering, to let him know that I’d be okay, at least for now. And I wanted to assure Paul, even if it was just his subconscious, that somewhere, his father was thinking about him, that he was worried about him.
“Daddy says hi.”

EXCERPT:
“Hey!”
She heard his voice before she saw him.
Had she known the ultimate cost of that simple glance heavenward, maybe she wouldn’t have stopped. Maybe she would have just kept on walking with her head down. But fate held no warnings for Laire Maiden Cornish.
Shielding her eyes, she looked up at a deck wrapped around the second floor of the mansion, waiting a moment for her eyes to adjust as he came into view.
There, in the glittering sunlight . . . a boy.
No, a man.
A young man, a little older than she, tall and muscular, with jet-black hair and a square jaw, dark brown eyes, and a deep tan. He wore a robin’s-egg blue bathing suit with Kelly green palm fronds in a small repeat and a pair of sunglasses buried in his thick hair. In one hand, he held a phone up to his ear, and in the other, he slowly swirled a glass filled with ice and clear liquid. He stared out at the sound, concentrating on his call.
“Hey!” he yelled. “Can you hear me now?” He huffed with annoyance, pulling the phone away from his ear and squinting at it before trying again. “Pete? It’s Erik. Can you hear me?” He set the glass down on the balcony’s wooden railing and gave his phone his full attention. Staring down at it, he muttered, “Shit. No reception.”
It’s Erik.
Erik.
His name is Erik.
Feeling a sharp burn in her lungs, Laire realized she’d been holding her breath and sucked in a huge gulp of air as she stared up at him, frozen in the moment, utterly mesmerized.
She had never seen a more perfect, more handsome person in her entire life.
The sun glinted off his dark hair and wrapped his body in gold, making him appear godlike so very far above her. Were she the type to swoon, Laire imagined she would have been a puddle of goopy longing on the ground below him, content to sacrifice her pride for a glimpse at his beauty.

Publication date: February 21st 2017
Genres: Fairy Tales, Retelling, Young Adult

Synopsis: Peter is plotting his retaliation against the latest bombing. Neverland needs an army, and Peter Pan is certain children will join him once they know what is at stake. The lost boys and girls are planning an invasion in suburbia to recruit, but in order to deliver their message, they will need the help of an old and dangerous associate—the infamous Pied Piper.
Hunting him down will require a spy in in the real world, and Gwen soon finds herself in charge of locating the Piper and cutting an uncertain deal with him. She isn’t sure if Peter trusts her that much, or if he’s just trying to keep her away from him in Neverland. Are they friends, or just allies? But Peter might not even matter now that she’s nearly home and meeting with Jay again.
The Piper isn’t the only one hiding from the adults’ war on magic though, and when Gwen goes back to reality, she’ll have to confront one of Peter’s oldest friends… and one of his earliest enemies.
EXCERPT:
Rosemary and Gwen were subject to the same rude awakening when they felt fairies pulling their hair early the next morning. “Owww!” Rosemary whined, only seconds before Gwen felt it too.
“Wha—stop!” Gwen shouted, slapping at the pestering fairy. She opened her eyes and saw an unsettling blue glow. Where were Foxglove and Hawkbit? She’d expected something purple or yellow. The blue fairy pinched her ear, and she attempted to bat it away again. Her eyes were too blurred with sleep to see clearly, but she rubbed them and insisted, “I’m awake! Give me a second.”
His furious trilling jogged her memory of the blue fairy. As her eyes finally focused, she saw the sharp features and angry face of a fairy she’d encountered once before.
“Oxtail?” she asked. He boxed her in the nose, his tiny fist stinging. “Owww! Oxalis?” He grumbled more amenably, and Gwen knew she at least had his name right.
Hawkbit buzzed like a wasp around Rosemary, but Foxglove paced on her wings near the ceiling. They all jittered with panicked motions, shouting over each other. It occurred to Gwen how out of place Oxalis was. Had the ill-tempered fairy ever left Neverland or sought out lost children? A horrible fear settled in her stomach as she realized just how wrong something must be for Oxalis to come to her.
“What’s the matter?”
His fury was indecipherable. She threw the covers off and stood up, trying to catch Foxglove’s attention. “What’s going on, Foxglove? Why is Oxalis here?” Her speech was just as hurried and flustered. There was no following it. Even Rosemary, much better at following fairy speak, couldn’t translate.
Oxalis buzzed into her face. Determined to make his message known, he shouted at Gwen, channeling his frustration into volume not speed.
“Hollyhock?” Gwen gathered.
He buzzed yes, and then continued. It felt like an unpleasant game of charades.
“Drones?” she repeated. Foxglove let out a pained cry, and the reality of it dawned on Gwen. “Oh no.”
The girls raced to Tiger Lily’s room, fairies fast behind. Gwen felt herself lurching back into childhood. Go get the grown-up. Grown-ups know what to do.
“Tiger Lily!” Rosemary exploded into the room, wearing a tiny nightgown borrowed from Neverland. Gwen suddenly felt absurd, rushing into Tiger Lily’s room, hiding behind the lost guise of naivety as her fear surged forward. Who was this woman to her that she could be a friend or an authority, whichever suited Gwen’s needs at the moment?
“What’s the matter?” Tiger Lily cried, bolting upright. She wore a large Washington Redskins jersey like a nightgown and had her hair pulled into two black braids. She was already out of bed before the girls could answer. Without any information, she pulled on a pair of jeans and prepared to deal with some unknown disaster. The fairies were faster to explain than the girls. By the time Gwen had sputtered, “It’s Hollyhock—she’s been taken by drones!” Tiger Lily already understood.
She put a hand to her mouth, covering her inexpressive but expansive grief. Her features stayed like stone on her face as she crossed the room to sit on her reading chair. Folding her legs up, she found a comfortable position on the plush armchair and seemed not to mind the fairies and girls orbiting around her in panic.
“Is she still alive?” Rosemary squeaked. Foxglove wailed.
“Certainly,” Tiger Lily answered. “Her pixie dust is too valuable to their purposes for them to kill her.”
“How do we rescue her?” Rosemary pleaded.
She was not so quick to respond. Her eyes stayed steady, as if she could physically see the problem in front of her. “I don’t know. She’ll be nearby. It will be easier to contain and experiment with her magic if they’re already in a magically dense environment.”
“So she’s in some kind of laboratory?” Gwen guessed. “Somewhere under the control of the
Anomalous Activity Department?”
“They have a holding facility that they’ll be keeping her in.” Tiger Lily’s distress was barely visible on her face, but a look of intense concentration gave away how troubled her mind was.
“Where is it?” Rosemary demanded, as if she wanted to charge the facility that very second.
“I don’t know. I just know they have one. It’s where they put magical folks who refuse to join the grown-ups. It’s hidden, with a similar magic that hides Neverland.”
“How on earth do we find it then?” Gwen exclaimed.
Tiger Lily looked her dead in the eye, her composure regained. “The same way you find Neverland: you find someone who has been there before.”
Rosemary’s hands tightened into fists. Gwen felt a chill perch on the top of her spine as that night’s errand gathered even greater importance.

Review: The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco

Series: The Bone Witch #1
Publication Date: March 7th, 2017

Genre: YA, Fantasy, Paranormal
Amazon ~ Goodreads ~ B&N

Synopsis: When Tea accidentally resurrects her brother from the dead, she learns she is different from the other witches in her family. Memoirs of a Geisha meets The Name of the Wind in this brilliant new fantasy series by Rin Chupeco!

My Rating
4/5 stars

My Review
A heartwarming main character, a breathtaking fantasy world, and a story you wont soon forget. The Bone Witch is absolutely amazing!

It wasn’t Tea’s intention to bring her brother back to life, she just felt compelled to do it. When Tea discovered she’s a Bone Witch, she is taken to Kion to start her training as an asha. It’s not easy being an asha of the dead, Tea soon learns that with her power, she is bound to make a lot of enemies, even though her power is one of the most important in protecting the kingdom. With evil threats rising, and the only other Bone Witch close to death, it is up to Tea to take control of her powers, and protect the people who fear her.

Being in Tea’s mind was absolutely wonderful. I love her as a main character. I can’t help to relate to her, she’s very smart and determined towards her studies, but she also shows a passionate side towards her friends and brother. She can be confident at the right times, and knows how to get things to go her way.

This book is told basically in two points of views, I called them little Tea and big Tea. We start the story off with Big Tea all on her own, coming across a bard and telling him her life story, while trying to bring an army of the dead alive. That’s when we get the back story and we see little Tea come in, starting from the moment she resurrected her brother. While I wasnt a huge fan of this aspect at first, it really grew on me by the end of the book, and I loved both points of the story equally.

I really love the world that Rin created. From the asha, to the daevas. It was all so creative, the creatures, the characters, just everything. While we only get to see the kingdom of Kion, we are told of other kingdoms in the story, hopefully to be explored in further books. I can't wait to explore more of the world that Rin created.

Now to the sad note, the reason why I didn't give this book 5 stars, and the reason why I was debating between 3 and 4 stars for a while, was the plot of the story. Don't get me wrong, I loved the story, but there was no rising action, nothing to keep you really engaged. Usually when I read, the book takes you through a rollercoaster ride, small bumps at first and then the one huge drop right at the end, well this book didn't have that, not really. Throughout the first 70% it was basically a flat line, maybe with a tiny little bump but nothing too exciting. Then after the 70% mark, you slowly start to see some hills in the plot, but then it almost stops for a bit, and then continues. Hopefully you guys understand what I mean. So basically, no a lot of action, even though it was a beautiful story.

The ending of the book, is what made me give the book 4 stars. It was captivating, and even though there was no cliffhanger, it really makes you want to read the next book in the series.

Overall, The Bone Witch is a fantastic book. The characters and the world are absolutely perfect. As long as you don't mind not a lot of action, then I definitely recommend this book.

Happy Reading,
Aneta

Adrenaline Rush by Cindy M. Hogan
As I hurtled toward my destination at 500 miles an hour, I pulled out a notebook, placed it on the shiny mahogany table in front of me, and scribbled a quick to-do list. Pick out an outfit. Get folders and notebooks. Switch into fourth period drama. I chewed on the end of my pen. Oh yeah—just one more thing. Get kidnapped.
According to my pre-mission briefing, kidnappings were up in the States by five percent over the last five years. The significance of which didn’t hit me until I found that the statistics for kidnappings had remained static for a good thirty years. The spike caught the attention of the FBI, and they put their best men on it. The problem? Right when they thought they’d discovered the pattern of the kidnappers, it seemed to change.
We hit some turbulence, and the force of it pulled me out of my reverie. I sucked in a deep breath, my hands resting on the soft leather side arms of my big comfortable seat as the Gulfstream jet jumped. I let the rollercoaster feeling wash over me like a wave, forcing myself to enjoy every last tingle. I only had this flight and a few hours tonight to assume my new thrill-seeking alias—the one that would lure the kidnappers and save the day before the pattern changed again. I might as well make the most of it.

Chosen Wolf (Curse of the Moon #2) Excerpt
The full moon inched higher in the night sky, growing bigger and brighter by the moment. One by one, the members of the pack ran behind the Moonhaven mansion to remove their clothes before they tore to shreds as their bodies turned from men to wolves. Howls sounded in the distance.
Toby squeezed my hand, holding my gaze. “Maybe this will be the month you can finally shift again, Victoria.”
Sharp pains ran through my body. My right hip cracked. I bit my tongue, trying not to cry out in pain. My skin felt on fire as fur tried to poke through, but couldn’t.
His face tensed, a pained look in his eyes. “Are you shifting?”
I shook my head. There was nothing normal about this, and it was proving to be more difficult and painful than my other months of un-shifts. Each one grew worse than the last.
Toby scooped me up, carried me inside, and helped me onto my bed. “I can’t keep my wolf inside any longer. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay.” I fought to keep my voice steady. Tears threatened.
He brushed hair from my face and kissed my forehead. “Ziamara’s upstairs sleeping. She said to wake her if you need anything.”
“I’ll be fine.” I grimaced, the pain nearly choking me.
Toby cried out and the sound of ripping fabric tore through the room. He spun around and dashed out the door. The back of his shirt had ripped, and fur poked through the split material.
I gripped a pillow, squeezing it as hard as I could to distract myself from the pain. It didn’t work, and the pillow exploded, filling the air with white feathers.
A loud pop sounded and then a horrific pain shot through my shoulders. I slumped down and screamed, unable to take the pain.

Now she brings together her love of LGBTQ literature, urban fantasy, young adult fiction, and the secret world of the Fae in her lesbian YA series, Circuit Fae--so that young adults of the LGBTQ community can have heroes that understand, that think and act, live and love like them.
GIE is also an MFA grad, a martial artist, a self-rescuing princess, and all-around strong female character. She’s multi-published, and in her role as an editor has helped hundreds of authors make their dream of being published a reality.
GIE believes in fairies (in fact, she’s clapping right now), true love (not “to blave”), and championing the often-unheard female voice. She might be using D&D figures to plot out an epic fight scene right now.

Excerpt

I’ve often heard that few people actually remember things that happened to them before the age of three. My dad once told me his earliest memory was at age four, and I told him that mine was at two. He didn’t challenge it. And for a really long time, I truly believed the memory of my mom and me in the snow was real. Don’t get me wrong—it was real in the sense that it happened, but that memory, well, it came from a home video.
In the video, my mom held me in her arms. Bundled up in a pink parka and braving the cold in the Colorado Rockies, I looked like a little fish swallowing flakes as fast as they fell. My mom wore a pink coat, too; only hers had a fur-trimmed hood framing her wind-chapped face. As I devoured the huge crystalline snowflakes, Mom giggled and doused my fat cheeks with kisses. Years later, Dad told me we’d taken that trip to the mountains for Christmas—our last with her. The video was the only memory I had of my mom, and every time it snowed, images of that day resurfaced in my mind.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, snow swirled in the gray sky like mini-tornados. I pushed away the thoughts of my mom and looked at the woman across from me at the kitchen table. “Do you think we’ll get the storm?” I asked her.

Follow Me Back by A. V. Geiger
Tessa Hart’s world feels very small. Confined to her bedroom with agoraphobia, her one escape is the online fandom for pop sensation Eric Thorn. When he tweets to his fans, it’s like his speaking directly to her…

Eric Thorn is frightened by his obsessive fans. They take their devotion way too far. It doesn’t help that his PR team keeps posting to encourage their fantasies.

When a fellow pop star is murdered at the hands of a fan, Eric knows he has to do something to shatter his online image fast—like take down one of his top Twitter followers. But Eric’s plan to troll @TessaHeartsEric unexpectedly evolves into an online relationship deeper than either could have imagined. And when the two arrange to meet IRL, what should have made for the world’s best episode of Catfish takes a deadly turn…

Told through tweets, direct messages, and police transcripts.

Rose Petal Graves by Olivia Wildenstein
ANCIENT SECRETS CANNOT REMAIN BURIED FOREVER.

Founded two centuries ago by a powerful tribe of Gottwa Indians, Rowan was a quiet town, so quiet that I fled after graduation. Staying away was the plan, but Mom died suddenly.

Dad said she suffered a stroke after she dug up one of the ancient graves in our backyard, which happens to be the town cemetery. Creepy, I know. Creepier still, there was no corpse inside the old coffin, only fresh rose petals.

As we made preparations for Mom’s burial, new people began arriving in Rowan, unnervingly handsome and odd people. I begged them to leave, but they stayed, because their enemies—my ancestors—were beginning to awaken.

What did you guys get this week? Let me know in the comments.
