Review: Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton

Series: Rebel of the Sands #1
Publication Date: March 8th, 2016
Publisher: Viking Books for Young Readers
Genre: YA, Fantasy
Amazon ~ Goodreads ~ TBD

Synopsis: She’s more gunpowder than girl—and the fate of the desert lies in her hands.

Mortals rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mystical beasts still roam the wild and barren wastes, and rumor has it that somewhere, djinni still practice their magic. But there's nothing mystical or magical about Dustwalk, the dead-end town that Amani can't wait to escape from.

Destined to wind up "wed or dead," Amani’s counting on her sharpshooting skills to get her out of Dustwalk. When she meets Jin, a mysterious and devastatingly handsome foreigner, in a shooting contest, she figures he’s the perfect escape route. But in all her years spent dreaming of leaving home, she never imagined she'd gallop away on a mythical horse, fleeing the murderous Sultan's army, with a fugitive who's wanted for treason. And she'd never have predicted she'd fall in love with him... or that he'd help her unlock the powerful truth of who she really is.

My Review

“She moved like a storm someone had given steel to.”

I am so amazed at how good this book was. Considering I haven't heard of it until Traitor to the Throne came out, I was really surprised. It has the perfect amount of action, romance and fantasy.

Amani is such a strong character. I instantly fell in love with her. Right from the beginning, even though she is in a horrible place, it doesn't stop her from staying strong and trying to get out. She is smart, cunning and very resourceful. I love how she taught herself how to shoot, I love her sass, and I love her strength. Honestly, there isn't a thing that I would change about Amani.

We meet Jin right at the beginning of the book, he is of course the main love interest. While I loved Jin's character at first, later on I kind of realized that he's not always the smartest, and while he is very loyal, you can't always command him as he just does whatever he thinks is right. Even though he can be really frustrating at times, I still really liked him as the main love interest, needless to say he's not my favourite, but I still enjoyed his character.

The plot of this book was amazing. The story captured me only a couple chapters in. Then I was up reading late at night just to finish this book. This book is filled with so much action and adventure, and the author did an amazing job of keeping it fresh and interesting. There wasn't a part in the plot that I found boring. The story changed fast and kept the reader interested.

The reason why I couldn't give this book 5 stars, is because there was a lot of moments where you could totally predict what was going to happen. Right from chapter one, you could tell that Jin was going to be the main love interest, that Amani was going to escape her town, and a bunch of other things. The other reason is that there were no huge surprises or revelations (well there was one that surprised me a bit, but not good enough). I was expecting a plot twist or something crazy to happen, so I was a little sad when nothing like that happened.

Overall, I still think this is a fantastic series. I'm starting the second book right after this one because I need more of this story. I highly recommend this one to all Fantasy lovers, especially if you love lots of action and adventure, and don't mind the plot being a bit obvious. I hope you enjoy it.

Happy Reading,
Aneta
